Book Donation Guidelines

Initiative:

Several years ago, United Way of Utah County’s community assessment found that the 3rd grade reading scores in Utah County were falling. Studies have shown that if a child is not at reading level by 3rd grade they are less likely to graduate from high school. In response to this data, United Way of Utah County initiated the EveryDay Learners initiative to increase focus on literacy in Utah County. We want more kids to be interested in books and more parents to be involved in reading. The books that are donated will be used in Lending Libraries across Utah County in order to provide literacy support for children and families in our community. By increasing access to high quality books for local children, we are encouraging them to develop a love for reading, learning, and succeeding.

Guidelines:

  • Community members can do their own book drive if they would like in their neighborhoods, church groups, or between friends. This can also be an individual project.
  • Books must be age appropriate for children ranging from infancy to 8th grade. This includes board books, picture books, early readers, and early chapter books.
  • We can only take books that are gently used. We CANNOT accept any books of a religious nature, adult romance novels, or encyclopedias/textbooks. When we receive books that are not in good condition, religious in nature, encyclopedias, etc., we cannot distribute them and we have to dispose of them. It costs us time and money to know how to handle these books appropriately. You can make the biggest impact on the community by being careful with what books you collect and donate. ***See the next page for examples of what we cannot accept.
  • The books must be disinfected. Use disinfecting wipes to clean the cover of the books by removing dust, stains, and price tags from all the books.
  • Drop books off at Welcome Baby of Utah County. The address is 817 S Freedom Blvd. You will enter the west-facing door. Drop off books on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 AM - 5 PM. If you have any questions about book drop off call 801-691-5440
