Volunteer: Lending Library Gently-Used Book Drive!Book Donation Guidelines Initiative: Several years ago, United Way of Utah County’s community assessment found that the 3rd grade reading scores in Utah County were falling. Studies have shown that if a child is not at reading level by 3rd grade they are less likely to graduate from high school. In response to this data, United Way of Utah County initiated the EveryDay Learners initiative to increase focus on literacy in Utah County. We want more kids to be interested in books and more parents to be involved in reading. The books that are donated will be used in Lending Libraries across Utah County in order to provide literacy support for children and families in our community. By increasing access to high quality books for local children, we are encouraging them to develop a love for reading, learning, and succeeding.
Guidelines: Community members can do their own book drive if they would like in their neighborhoods, church groups, or between friends. This can also be an individual project. Books must be age appropriate for children ranging from infancy to 8th grade. This includes board books, picture books, early readers, and early chapter books. We can only take books that are gently used. We CANNOT accept any books of a religious nature, adult romance novels, or encyclopedias/textbooks. When we receive books that are not in good condition, religious in nature, encyclopedias, etc., we cannot distribute them and we have to dispose of them. It costs us time and money to know how to handle these books appropriately. You can make the biggest impact on the community by being careful with what books you collect and donate. ***See the next page for examples of what we cannot accept. The books must be disinfected. Use disinfecting wipes to clean the cover of the books by removing dust, stains, and price tags from all the books. Fill out the form “Book Donation Information.” The form must be included with your donation. Drop books off at Welcome Baby of Utah County. The address is 817 S Freedom Blvd. You will enter the west-facing door. Drop off books on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 AM - 5 PM. Volunteer: Make a Difference in a Child's LifeCome play with children in our Crisis Respite Nursery! Our Crisis Respite Nursery provides a safe place for children ages newborn to 11 years old. Families use the nursery for a crisis such as a medical emergency, death of a family member, a mental health crisis, or if a child is at risk of experiencing abuse, neglect, or trauma. The nursery is most often used for respite reasons (a break). This includes a parent or guardian needing to attend a therapy appointment, support group, court hearing, doctor appointment, or a job certification class or interview--or just feeling stressed and needing a break. Once the children enter the nursery, we want them to feel safe and simply play and be a kid. As a volunteer, your main responsibility is spending one-on-one time with the children. We expect you to play with them and have fun with them. WHEN CAN I VOLUNTEER? Volunteers choose a shift with our Nursery Coordinator. These shifts can be scheduled any day/time when the nursery is open: MON-THUR 9 am to 9 pm FRI 9 am to 5 pm SAT 4 pm to 8 pm (occasionally)After orientation, you must set up at least one consistent weekly time to come (usually a 1-2 hour shift). That way we can expect you the same day and time every week. You must commit to help a minimum of 20 hrs. Depending on your availability, this minimum requirement can be done within 3-4 months, but we would greatly appreciate volunteers who are able to help longer periods of time. HOW DO I GET STARTED? Volunteers attend a 90 minute orientation where a background check will be filled out and mailed to the Dept of Human Services Office of Licensing. You MUST pass a background check in order to volunteer. This can take 3-5 weeks to process. You may volunteer once before the background check clears, but then must wait to schedule additional shifts until you are notified it has cleared. Background checks will cost the volunteer $38.25, but can be reimbursed after 20 hours of volunteering. If you are 16 or 17 you must attend orientation, but don't need a background check.
